Hi subscriber,

Time For Some "Reversals"

by Michael Brennan

How many of our favorite scriptures are taught and understood as 90% us and 10% Holy Spirit. However, the reverse is true when we let the Holy Spirit put His percent on those scriptures. Let's go through just a few favorites:

ONE:
"The fervent, effective prayer of a righteous man avails much" - Sounds like "availing prayer" is the result of our intense (fervent) passion and our "right doing" (effective). But, unfortunately, it sounds like neither will work if we are not "righteous," meaning not walking rightly.
However, that verse is NOT talking about our fervency, effectiveness, or righteousness but His. If we are talking about "ours," then a single time of lost passion or failure to "do it right" or a fleeting moment of "unrighteous" behavior would nullify everything. It is HIS and not "ours." "When He (the Holy Spirit) comes, He will reveal and transmit to you everything that is mine." - Jesus. "Availing" prayer is 90% His fervency and His effectiveness and His righteousness. Our 10% is to invite the Holy Spirit to awaken the 90% already in us. (I actually think it to be more like 99.9%).

TWO:
"With fear and trembling, work out your salvation…" - Sounds like, now saved, we need to be applying a whole lot of "fear and trembling" to "work out" the sanctification part of our salvation. But the very next verse makes it abundantly clear that "fear and trembling" is not our doing. "For it is God who enables… giving us both the will and the desire." His "It is finished" is full of all the "fear and trembling" we will ever need to "work out our salvation." Way more than 90%! Our part is to give the Holy Spirit continual permission to activate ALL that His "fear and trembling" has won for us, including His perfect will and desire being accomplished.

THREE:
And here is one of my favorites: "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."
It sounds like our continual confessing is needed before He will forgive and cleanse us, and therefore, continually confessing our sins seems to be the desired goal.
But Holy Spirit-inspired "confessing" is declaring what God thinks about your "sins." And once again, "It is finished" is ALL the Father feels about us. Our 10% is to quickly and consistently invite Holy Spirit's input into our moments of 'bad' behavior so that He can awaken us to our Father's infinite Forgiveness, causing us to shift our focus from our behavior to His Perfect Righteousness.

Holy Spirit has so many more "reversals" of His word for us. Maybe we should invite His input ALL THE TIME. His goal is not just new insight into our favorite verses but just perhaps, a 90/10% reversal in EVERYTHING. ("Yoke (invite) yourself to Me (all the time) My yoke is easy and My burden light")
"For all the promises of God in Him
are Yes, and in Him Amen,
to the glory of God through us.
Now He who establishes us with you in Christ
and has anointed us is God,
who also has sealed us and given us
the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee."
2 Corinthians 1:20-22
